2011 UC Davis Archaeological Field School

Cape Espenberg
Bering Land Bridge National Monument, Alaska

Field schools are an important and necessary part of a degree and/or career in archaeology, and a valuable addition to a resume. Offered during the first UC Davis summer session (June 20th-July 29th), the UC Davis field school will provide students with a demanding, extensive, six week course of hands-on training in archaeological field techniques. Participants will be enrolled through UC Davis in ANT 181-Alaska for a total 9 summer session units.

During the course, students will receive practical training in the following areas:

   • data recording methods
   • excavation and surveying methods
   • identification of cultural materials
   • mapping
   • global positioning systems (GPS)

During the latter part of the field school, we will be joined by elders and high school students from the surrounding communities. Participants will act as student mentors to the high school students by instructing them in basic excavation and data recording techniques.
