2011 UC Davis Archaeological Field School

Cape Espenberg
Bering Land Bridge National Monument, Alaska

Applications are now being accepted for the 2011 UCD archaeological field school at Cape Espenberg, Alaska. Five students will have the opportunity to participate in a collaborative, multidisciplinary NSF-funded project that is aimed at gaining a comprehensive understanding of the human occupation of Cape Espenberg over the past 4,000 years, with a particular emphasis on Thule culture. Participants will receive training in survey and excavation techniques, as well as basic laboratory procedures. Students will work alongside researchers from UC Davis, UA Fairbanks, CU Boulder, and the Sorbonne, and will also serve as mentors to several local high school students that will be joining the field school during the second half of the project.

The course will take place during UC Davis Summer Session I, from June 20th-July 29th. The cost will be approximately $2500 for UC students and $3600 for non-UC students, plus an additional $100 lab fee. Participants are also responsible for procuring their own basic excavation equipment and cold weather gear. Students will receive 9 graded quarter units at the end of the class. Applications may be picked up in person from the main Anthropology office in 330 Young Hall, or downloaded via the application link below.

APPLICATION DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO MARCH 21, 2011
